Macrovision sues 321 Studios in DMCA, patent actions

Claims firm bypasses copy protection on DVDs

321 STUDIOS is being sued by Macrovision over alleged infringement of copy protection technology and breaching the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Macrovision claimed that 321 has infringed its intellectual property with its DVD X disk cloning software products, which it said let users make unauthorised copies of its process.

The firm also claimed that it illegally bypasses the Macrovision copy protection system.

The CEO of Macrovision claimed: "It's ironic that 321 Studios itself employs a sophisticated mechanism to prevent people from making illegal copies of its software, while at the same time selling products that aid in the theft of the intellectual property created by moviemakers".

Macrovision claimed 321's DVD copying software activates its own analogue copy protection process, letting people make unlicensed copies of DVDs.

That breaches not only its own IP, but also the DMCA, Macrovision alleges. It has asked the courts to injunct distribution of 321 products that allegedly breach its property and this act. µ
