Mexicans offered computers-for-guns deal

Cut down crime, get a PC
Wednesday, 25 January 2006, 06:58
MEXICANS are being offered a computer in exchange for any guns they might have lying around the place.

The idea is the brain child of a local council which is a bit worried about the number of guns in Mexican society.

Many Mexicans have a gun at home for self-defence and not surprisingly there are also a large number of shootings, carjackings and kidnappings.

Guadalupe Lopez, local government head for the central district of Alvaro Obregon, told Reuters that the computers-for-guns program echoes schemes in other city districts that offered groceries for guns. It will target some of the district's most crime-hit areas.

In the US, concerned parents are working out how to outlaw violent games such as Grand Theft Auto. It is nice to think that the use of such games is preventing people being killed violently just across the border. More here. µ
