CHINESE DEVELOPMENTS in outer space and cyberspace have impressed the US's army's top brass.

General James Cartwright, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command told the US China Economic and Security Review Commission that China's military modernisation was alarming.

He said that China had a well-organised cyber war programme and "a long-term view, not a short-term view, in this activity and it will pay off".

Cartwright said that few other countries had shown the financial will or the scale that China had managed.

He added that the recent destruction of a satellite by the Chinese was no surprise because it was the third time that they had a go at it. However the country needed to be watched because it never made its intentions clear.

The committee heard that China had more military might than was needed for local actions. µ
