Film studios sue Chinese companies

Rampant downloading alleged
Friday, 23 November 2007, 09:43

HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS have filed a lawsuit against a Chinese Internet download service and a cybercafe, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Reuters writes that Columbia, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios and Walt Disney all claim that Beijing-based Jeboo.com and a Shanghai Internet cafe provided illegal downloads of Pirates of the Caribbean and other copyrighted, first-run hit films.

The Hollywood giants claim that Jeboo.com wrote software that the cybercafe used to run a movie download business without paying the studios for the media content they peddled.

The studios' lawsuit seeks damages of 3.2 million yuan, or about $432,000, Xinhua wrote.

Jeboo.com styles itself as "My online cinema." It also claims that it's China's largest movie and video download portal, having nearly 30,000 film titles and television shows available.

Xie Jiangping, a company official, "refused to comment on whether it had violated the film companies' copyright[s]," said Xinhua. Also, the Jeboo.com website states its media files are "legally obtained" from "content providing partners" who sign copyright contracts. ยต

Well whaddya know ?

Did Hollywood finally grow itself a pair ? For once they're not suing a granny without a PC, or a 12-year-old for her tuition money, but they're actually suing a bunch of real pirates !

They finally managed to find one !
Gee, looks like miracles really do happen. Unfortunately for Hollywood, the pirates are going to have a good laugh and go on with their business.

Because China doesn't really need to worry about a lawsuit from Tinseltown. It's a different country, right ? US laws do not have any hold over there (heck, they don't have much traction left in the US either).
