According to Associated Press, the state of Virginia wants anyone who was ever convicted of a sexual crime to register their email addresses while New York wants those on parole to take lie detector tests about their Internet antics.
The New York plan means that parole officers will be able to tell people convicted of sexual crimes that they are not allowed to use the Internet.
In Virginia, the online identities of sex offenders will be used to help the MySpace social networking site and other online teen hangouts more easily block access.
There are more than 550,000 registered sex offenders in the US, with cases ranging from teens who had sex before the age of consent to multiple child rapists.
