Rural Britain boasts best broadband

Town and out
Fri May 23 2008, 15:40

FOR THOSE LIVING IN Britain's countryside, the word " bumpkin" no longer applies. Try "broadband" instead. Or so says communications outfit, Ofcom, which just released a report claiming that rural fat-pipe penetration is higher out in the sticks than in the cities.

Back in 2000 when broadband was first unleashed on the British public, some nay-sayers (neigh sayers in the country) reckoned it would cause an unacceptable and unfair digital divide. But, as it turns out, that was all a load of horse manure, with 59 per cent of houses in rural Britain on high speed Internet access, as opposed to 57 per cent in cities.

The British average stands at 57 per cent, which represents a 12 point rise in the past year. England has upped its fat pipe penetration by 13 per cent, Scotland by 11 per cent and Northern Ireland by 10 per cent. Despite being a rural nation of sheep lovers, the Welsh only managed to get their fat pipes up by three percentage points this last year.

But despite being bottom of the broadband haystack in the UK, the Welsh are definitely more connected when it comes to mobile phones, with 19 per cent of Welsh households even foregoing a landline in preference for the ear radiating devices, compared to the UK average of 12 per cent.

Digital TV also saw a 10 per cent rise this year, bringing the number of UK households with too many channels to watch to a whopping 85 per cent. µ

Best?

Only OFCOM could report that UK broadband is BEST - obviously they just read the hype from the ISP's advertising & believe we actually get an 8mb service.

Obviously Didnt read it

You obviously didnt read the article in question as it doesnt point out that fat pipe penetration is far more in the sticks than it is in the cities just that there are more people currently on ADSL in the rural areas.

Unless of course your Inqish is coming through again, and ive missed it. Even then in that case the headline is misleading at best.

The reason that ADSL penetration is less out in the sticks is that there are basically no cable operators out here, so we are forced to use ADSL, usually at far slower speeds than they can achieve in towns or cities.

So in actuality the real story is that

"Rural britain IS actually worse off than the inner cities due to the fact that we have Less choice in connection types, slower speeds and often worse quality copper than the inner cities. We also are the last to get upgrades to the network, often have to work with congested DSLAMS for much much longer than the inner cities and will probably get fiber some time in the tail end of the next century."

There, fixed your entire story for you.

Cell Phone Killed THE Kennedy.

Hon Kennedy has Brain Tumour, thought in part to be Cell Phone responable. Sure Kennedy is actually German, yet just saving money on cheap LG Cell may be poor.
However in territtories of England, that backroad HELL, going from .00001% useage to .0001% computing useage isn't Much Gain. Its NOT that BAd, till you drive thru & Lost.
Just Cleaning Out Massive amounts of Home Radon would be bigger help?.Victimizers little more afeared than Ruskies, yet just as poor.
Save Yourselves & then Fork Out Big for Computer?
Its information device.Get One & Use FULL contracted Bandwidth 24/7 or Waste Your Monies, if any.

P'edan'ts Corner?

"ear radiating devices"

Now is that devices that emit large quantities of ear radiation? Or did you mean "ear irradiating devices"?

Grabbing my coat now...

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
