PRICES OF TVs using flat panels have dropped by 40 per cent in Japan in a year, according to a survey conducted by nikkei.net.

The wire said that it monitored prices in major shops in Tokyo over the weekend, which marked the start of the "Golden Week" holidays.

But all that glitters is not gold for makers of big screen TVs. Sharp Aquos units and Sony Bravia 40-inch displays have slumped in price since their introduction.

Nor have recent introductions from Panasonic survived the price slashing in Japan - the wire reckoned a 37-inch Viera that the firm has just launched is already down in price, a mere week and a half after its introduction.

The message seems clear. Don't buy now, wait until the vendors' pips really start being squeezed. µ
