Single lonely booth with Apple Macs spotted, shocker

Expocomm Argentina 2005 wasn't even Mac specific
Friday, 30 September 2005, 19:39
I FOUND a handful of vendors offering Linux solutions at Expocomm Argentina, with Red Hat being the main presence. But when it comes to Mac, as far as I could see, there was zero, nothing, nada. Except for the guys at one booth, which sported what looked like a white iBook and a titanium one, with the main ubergeek carefully typing and staring at his screen. So after recovering from the surprise, I approached and inquired if they were offering a Mac OSX based product for portal hosting or editing. I was quickly interrupted by a nearby female representative: "They don't speak spanish, they're foreigners, speak with me". [oh really? I wouldn't have noticed :)].

Two iBooks on the LocalToolbox booth. The only Macs on the show.

It turns out that the company is Local Toolbox which offers a turnkey web service create web portals easily, with no software to install. So it wasn't even a Mac-specific product. Strange. I'm sure an exhibition about graphics design would have a much larger number of MacOS-X systems, but since this is one of the largest IT related local trade shows and exhibitions, one has to wonder if there's any Mac use in corporations. And even more so, where's the local Apple distributor?. He might be doing so well that he doesn't need to win the hearts and minds of any new users, it seems. On the positive side, maybe this story will prompt someone to wise up and set up a Mac promoting booth at the next Expocomm?. I'm not a fan of Mac but I acknowledge that diversity in the IT ecosystem is a good thing.

Before some Mac readers chase me down the street with their pitchforks and torches, let me say that is merely an observation, and doesn't imply anything. It's just a fact, about this particular exhibition, this year, on this country. On the positive side, maybe this story will prompt someone to wise up and set up a Mac related booth at the next Expocomm?. It seems to me like a sensible thing to do. And if you're an INQ reader down here in South America, go to these guys´ web site. They travelled across the world with their loved iBooks and need to know it was worth it. µ
