The follow up to the 8800GTX is.....

No points if you guess 9800GTX
Tuesday, 19 February 2008, 08:42

WHAT WILL NVIDIA replace the 8800GTX with? How about the incredibly cunningly named 9800GTX! Shock!

Yup, the 9800GTX just popped up in their top secret docs, with only one spec attached to it, 768M. Guess that starts to answer the question. ยต

...but what comes next?

All well and good, but after the 9800 whatevers (GT, GTS, GTX, GT Pro?), what is the next number?

18000 GTX, GTS, GT
or
10800 GTX, GTS, GT

Im quite puzzled by this...

Stop with the numbers

Hopefully they will stop the numbers game. It got old about 5 years ago.

GeForce 1.08x10^4

If all goes well, nVidia will move to scientific notation for their GeForce numbering scheme. They could also drop the name and all it something else completely (kind of like Intel dropping the "Pentium" name on all its chips) and calling it the OhForce or something.

Of course, this will never happen because nVidia has too much brand recognition with GeForce. They also can't make it X800, etc because ATi beat them to the punch.

Sadly it looks as though everyone will have the most interest in what happens to the model number formating, rather than the card's actual performance.
