Asus Ebox ready for launch

Wii-alike PC
Saturday, 24 May 2008, 20:10

THE RUMOUR MILL has cranked up to Defcon 1 with the news of the desktop version of Eeeeeeeeee PC being launched at Computex.

It’s now been officially confirmed to us that arriving like a new-born to the ASUSTeK family by courier stork, will be the EBOX on 3rd June.

The only details that have been delivered to use at present are that it contains a 160GB Hard Drive, 2GB ram, will run Linux OS as found on the EeePC.

Although no CPU details were forthcoming, the likely suspect is still the Intel Atom – but who are we to speculate?

Asus EBOX – aka Nintendo Wii looking device

The unit does look rather like a Wii they’ve even got the angle right, unsure if that’s deliberate – but we do expect many parents to come home with the wrong console and emancipation hearings to follow.

More details to come as they become officially unveiled to us, or just wait for the full skinny from Taipei. µ

Vista is Small Platform Choice.

Although Atom clearly only plays XP?, Some report Vista useage & Now Linux. However, Since Vistas' release, First equipment Mfgs to use Vista have been Smart Phones. Its NO Brainer.

If Atom is XP Only, Then Linux will sieze it Up Often. If Atom can Play Vista?, Made Big Mistake in O/S & actually threw unit in Trash preRelease.
Maybe Pundits whom test Atom on Vista? can explain or Maybe its NOT Atom.

Console Lookalike

It has a name like an Xbox and an image like a Wii...I can see the accidental purchase happening quite a bit!

EBOX? How does Microsoft Respond to this?

Isn't this violating patent laws on Microsoft's XBOX?

Yeah, Right

That is a photoshop of a Wii made black and with an Asus logo plastered on it. Called Ebox.

Does theInq have absolutely NO editorial control now that MikeM has gone? This isn't April 1st...

Trademark issues

eBOX is already taken by Axiomtek.

Likeness

That ASUS EBox looks *too* much like the Wii picture underneath. The term "photoshopping" comes to mind.

@Max

defon is a typo, meant Defcon which is defense condition, aka alert status.

[Fixed! Ed.]

Meta comment

The comments left here are worse than the average /. posting. Yes, Vista can run on a Atom, just very slowly. Linux is a far better match for an Atom processor since it is easier to tailor to a low "horsepower" CPU. As far as the XBOX patent; just a complete lack of understanding of the various laws (let alone various laws in various countries).

Maybe the clueful just don't comment? (Ob recursion noted).

AMD CPUs = Puma ...

I might even be a AMD CPU, instead of
a Intel one. A Puma cpu and the 790G
chipset would be a very good combo ...

"officially confirmed"

Doesn't look like it's been photoshopped by The Inq, but it may have been at source.

Am sure those specific details came from ASUS, as the piece mentions it was "officially confirmed".
Judging by their ties to the company I doubt they would have just reported the rumours like everyone else did

quality control

I'm normally quite miffed when L'Inq seldom seems to allow comments through moderation. Judging by the dross on this article, I can suddenly see why. Today, having let their guard down, some right plonkers have slipped through the net and said their piece.

I can barely make out the intent of the first comment -- don't think Vista was mentioned, and why on earth would you want to shoe-horn that steaming pile into a low spec device such as this?

And as for the "that's a PhotoShopped Wii" comments and their ilk, I take it you've never seen a Wii, not to mention looking elsewhere for corroboration on the EBOX (there's plenty). Yes, it's a vertical white (or black) box, a bit on-the-piss and erm erm erm .... yes that's where the similarity ends. Oh and the second picture isn't a Wii, they're both the EBOX -- open your eyes much, genius?

Oh sod it, I don't know why I'm even bothering...

Anadtech has great pictures, and it is an Atom inside :)
