Sony grovels over Manchester Cathedral video game

We're sorry about the Praystation
Friday, 6 July 2007, 15:49
MANCHESTER CATHEDRAL has received an unreserved apology from Sony for using images of the place in a game for the Praystation 3.

The Manchester Evening News said Sony has offended the cathedral congregation.

It quotes Sony suit David Reeves as saying: "It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game, and we would like to apologise unreservedly to them for causing that offence, and to all parts of the community who we might also have offended." µ

Use of Churches Generally

This is a late comment, but Ecclesiastical Law provides for the following...

Once consecrated by the bishop (usually by a special consecration service), a building may not be used in a manner that does not respect its sanctity. A statutory duty is placed on any person or body undertaking the care and conservation of a church building in that they must have ‘due regard to the role of the church as a local centre of worship and mission’ (although this duty does not apply to a chancellor of the diocese when adjudicating a faculty petition), and all liturgical matters should be classed as a material consideration.

I don't think a game such as this can be remotely classed as "respecting its sanctity".

Let's hope Sony and other game makers respect this from now on.
