If my suit tears, my tailor doesn't say my Aris is too fat

Subject: Windows Vista "causes problems through industry" says Tiscali

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA! Let's get something straight here.

A company SELLS a product to a customer/consumer. We take MONEY and BUY a PRODUCT.

As we are OBLIGATED to PAY, they are OBLIGATED to SELL a WORKING product that SATISFIES the Customer. If not, you bitch and moan, you return it, you get your money returned, and you move on.

Then there is Microsoft and FAT SLOB Vista. Buy it; load it on your computer, and only THAT computer. If it doesn't work, TOUGH SH*T, they warned you about compatibility issues.

Ah, ----- let's put this into perspective, ---- ok?

I go to Brooks Bothers. I buy a $2500 suit. It tears at the seams. I go back to the store.

They don't tell me my ass is too FAT! They don't tell me I shouldn't be slamming my wife in the back seat of the car after a great night out! They don't tell me I shouldn't be clowning around with my kids after work! They don't tell me my BIG buddies shouldn't be trying to stuff me in an armoire at a bachelor party to shut me up.

WHY????

THEIR PRODUCTS DON'T COME APART AT SEAMS. THEY MAKE AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT. They don't compromise on quality or workmanship. They fix it and stand behind their products, AND THEIR CUSTOMERS. ------------HELLO!!

Vista is “tailored” to the needs of Microsoft Corporation and the hardware industry. Vista is not “tailored” to the needs of the customer.

Subject: Tiscali - vista

Is this an April 1st special or did Tiscali really send an email with links to a download for a driver?

If it is for real, well I am amazed. How unsafe can you get?

Anyway, what a new phishing scam! Send out an email "from your ISP" with a link to a download of a system driver to "correct a problem with the connection". Fake driver loaded, computer entirely under phiser's control, job done!

Wow!

Subject: AMD a good year in 07??

Dear Mr. Hales:

I'm not sure what you mean. AMD doesn't have any descent product that could effectively compete against Intel. R600 is very late, and Barcelona will just trickle out while Intel ready 45nm and CSI.

Subject: I don't understand

I don't understand the reasons for these types of articles. They seem created for the sole purpose of torpedoing Microsoft as they take common sense and normalcy and try to project it as some kind of computer haulocost to get vewiers.

I mean really, a new OS comes out and there are incompatabilities???? REALLY??? Who would have seen that coming? Anyone that does not plan for such an event regardless of your OS is short sited and not grounded to computer reality.

Another example of this are the articles this site ran ranting that the Feds were barring upgrades to Visa and IE7. I cannot see how anyone informed in the slighest of how the Fed's run their IT would be surprised by that.

Granted the annoucment itself was odd but the truth of the matter is that it had to be pollitical posturing for some reason we do not know about. Why?

Because Federal IT moves at the same pace as any other portion of the government. They don't use new brands of toilet paper unless teams of people have examined it, tested it and written a 50 page manual on how to properly use it. There is no way on gods green Earth they would have update anything without at least a year passing by.

I love this online mag but dressing up common sense and the obvious to be scandalous reeks of everything wrong that exists in the current media.

Remember the old line "Just the facts ma'am"? That should be your mantra.

Thank you for producing a fine news site, I hope you guys can just learn to stop putting lipstick on the pigs.

Subject: Windows Vista "causes problems through industry" says Tiscali

"Microsoft have launched a new operating system called Windows Vista..." - what rock did you just crawl out from under? Wasn't it for places like yours microsoft kept releasing endless supply of betas and release candidates?

Problems throughout the industry? Maybe the problem is not vista, maybe the problem is your customers who wouldn't just pay their fee but also want their internet connection to work? How great it would be to sit on your ass and collect it?

I'm sick and tired of dumbasses complaining that vista is not compatible with their software. How about admitting that your lousy code is doing something which would get an intern at microsoft fired in no time?

So for Tiscali and other places facing same issues. How about letting go to that "noreply" dude and few other middle managers along with him and from now on enforcing windows logo requirements upon the code which comes out of your software department?

Mike,

Being Irish, you may want stronger stuff than Kingfisher - check out Kalyani Black Label Strong. OTOH, if you want a really smooth, refined beer, there isn't anything better in India than Royal Challenge from Shaw Wallace.

I despise letters from people who haven't tried the thing they criticise. My grandmother runs Linux for the simple reason that it's easier for me to support than Windows. No longer do I need to read out arcane GUI interactions over the phone or drive over at inconvenient times. I just ssh or dial in and fix it for her.

Linux for Aunt Mabel does have issues, especially being able to use the wide range of internet media formats. But remote support isn't one of them.

Subject: Finishing articles

"This means," you write in your article about articles, "that only the most determined readers will have got this far through this story, so there's hardly any point writing any more."

Well, if you had stopped writing there, then readers would only have got 75% of the way to THAT bit. So it's good you continued.

The corollary is that if you want your articles finished, you just have to throw some gobbledygook on the end, like:

"Mayhemby anyweb october if you, wish to republish. Article or parts of then are free. Went no things stuck my yet view? Via yellow warning, bar, good trying."

Et voila! More readers will finish your stories! Hmm... this explains a lot of the emails I've been getting lately...

Subject: Vista multiboot problems

Vista has terrible multi-boot problems. The imagex program Microsoft has developed and shipped with Vista works well, but you cannot use it to backup Vista, then restore it to a new disk on a non-active partition. The drive letter will change to a non-C drive letter, screwing up Vista as the registry and various other portions of Vista are hardcoded to the drive-letter (still!).

XP never had this problem.

More technical information is here: http://www.multibooters.co.uk/mbr.html

Subject: coexistence

The problem is, you bought the upgrade version of Vista. If you had bought the full retail version it would not move everything to old-whatever directories. Full retail would coexist just fine. The upgrade version in the past trusted you to destroy previous copies of windows which you do not have a right to run anymore according to the EULA. MS now enforces their EULA at the crying and moaning of folks that could not keep their end of the bargain. Vista is the first Windows OS to enforce the upgrade policy that folks have been getting away with for years. This article is nothing but FUD.

Subject: Dell & Linux

Sorry, me old fruit, but you're wrong. Dell will not go bust within 2 years from offering Linux as an OS option, but they are likely to make buyers out of punters who wouldn't have considerered them before (me, for one) and as a result profits should increase.

I can only speak for myself, but as long as Dell ensures there are Open Source drivers for all the kit in the box, that will do me fine. I'm not a Linux expert by any means but I've managed to install Ubuntu on 3 or 4 different boxes and get it to play nice (with help from the forums), so I would expect that process to be easier with pre-certified hardware.

In the past I wouldn't have considered Dell as a possible vendor (I've always preferred to build my own) but from now on Dell becomes an option, especially in the area of laptops where rolling your own isn't really an option.

Once again, your pro-Microsoft/anti Open Source bias is preventing you from seeing straight...

Graham

Subject: MS quirks

this is actually good news to me, because i bought a normal xbox 360 a few days ago and thought i might be getting gyped if they were putting out a truly superior box. thank god this is not the case. Of course it would be nice to have a bigger hard drive, but really, what for. you cant rent their movies for longer than a day after you watch them, and how many game demos do you need? ideally, youd just be able to stream all your movies from a PC, but theyve made it all but impossible to do that. instead of just navigating your drives, the xbox requires the Zune software to be on your PC. which is great, except that the installer for the zune software doesnt really work. in fact, if youre using firefox, zune cannot even detect what operating system you are running. I did not realize that firefox was so cunning that it could shroud an entire operating system. Foxy indeed.

Subject: Wii aren't in right now, please leave a message

I have recently been charged with the task of helping my flatmate get hold of a Wii here in the UK.This, as many other Inquirer readers may know, is something of a Mission:Impossible- they simply don't exist in the wild at the moment. This, over four months after the console's release, is more than a little worrying, not to mention irritating.

While I would suggest that the widespread availability of PS3s on store shelves on launch day in the UK has ominous connotations for that product's initial appeal, the simple fact is that Sony's supply lines must be running much more smoothly than Nintendo's.This is in spite of Sony's much-publicised problems with the paltry yields of the Cell processor, and the relative ease with which Nintendo ought to be able to get the Wii's old hat components from IBM et al.

It seems to be common in the console industry to generate demand by a lack of availability on a console's release, but you have to let people get their hands on it at some point if you want to make money. It's no good being the most likeable manufacturer if you effectively don't have a product out- much of the early goodwill generated by the Wii's positive reception is wearing terribly thin these days.Meanwhile, Nintendo seems to have failed to learn from the mistakes made with the Gamecube and N64, which both proved poor competition for Sony mainly because of their lack of third-party support- a trend clearly being repeated for the Wii.When you combine these two crucial failings, things don't look so rosy for Nintendo (or at least the Wii- the DS is dynamite). It is a shame, since I, like many, have always had a place in my heart for Nintendo and had high hopes for the Wii.

Subject: dell is stupid. or smart

case #1: Dell is Stupid

Stupid people or cheap people buy Dells. Asus notebooks are bought by smarter or more well heeled individuals since they are significantly higher quality in terms of build and features. Therefore Dell doesn't even compete vs Asus, even in its XPS line since they don't have 14-15 " offerings.

case#2: Dell is smart

Dell has received so much flak over its insipid notebook design that it has some magical perfect asus/sony/macbook competitor that is both sleek and powerful in the works, and by forcing asus to spin out its notebook division, they gain an competitive advantage

Subject: HP kills Limux laptop warranty

Inquiries to HP Canada reveal that at least the Canadian division of HP does not automatically void warranties on laptops bearing Linux. By E-mail, HP pre-sales support says:

"Using Linux on an HP PC will not void your warranty in a blanket fashion. However, issues arising specifically from changing the operating system will not be covered under warranty. In other words, if you are unable to use certain hardware upon switching to Linux, HP will not provide support or drivers."

"If a hardware component fails during the standard warranty period and the failure is not a result of changing to factory OS, it will be still be covered under warranty."

Subject: Thomas's letter "Linux + Dell = money

"... As a matter of fact I think almost all Linux users will buy Dell if they need a built PC from now on. That is a lot (millions) of new customers ..."

Now that's a load of FUD. Hadn't you think about the fact that most current GNU/Linux users already build their own computers?

The Linux community needs no OEM to come and tell which pieces of cheap hardware work best with their suggested pretty distro. Leave that for the high managers that want a LAMP server working out of the box, along with a shiny branded badge in front of it, as they care not for the price, they just want a service providing company supporting their solution.

Subject: Vista betas - what's the point?

You've got to laugh at your Tiscali/Vista article ("causes problems through industry") because weren't the numerous Vista builds/betas/release candidates designed *exactly* for OEMs and ISVs like Tiscali (and the modem manufacturers they use) to test that their software would work on Vista prior to its launch (Nov 06 for businesses, Jan 07 for home users)?

It staggers me that 2 months after Vista's launch for home users, major companies still haven't released Vista versions of their software, despite having at least 2 years of pre-releases beforehand to test them on! No wonder I run Linux instead :-)
