Opteron makes for a strong showcase, oh yes

IMBX 007 Singapore Servers with a smyle

COULD AMD be staging a stunning comeback?

Well no, when strolling among the halls at imbX2007, I found an interesting booth in the Korean pavillion. Huge OPTERON letters attracted my attention - but no AMD there.

Opteron Co Ltd is a Korean manufacturer of optical fiber interconnecting components like Fiber Arrays, Fanout Arrays and Fanout Cords. Lots of this stuff is used in next-generation optical communications networks like DWDM(Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology.

Interestingly, the Opteron company was founded in 2000 - quite a bit earlier then AMD's 64-bit server 'brand' came out. Did Jerry "KFC" Sanders' lawyers do a proper name check prior to the company betting its future on the new brand? After all, if you give it some thought, Opteron does fit better to a maker of OPTical & ElectRONic equipment, isn't it?

Finally, I tried to talk to the booth staff about the company, but, well, no one was around - empty, just like my "Barcelona" Opteron CPU hopes this past Computex. ยต
