SONY ERICSSON'S high end phone, the Xperia X1 has been given a release date of the end of the month in the UK, Germany and Sweden.
The highly-anticipated smart phone has already been delayed before and rumours recently suggested that it would be put back again to sometime in 2009, however these have refuted with the setting of the official 30 September launch date.
The X1 marks several firsts for Sony Ericsson, being its first Windows Mobile phone, its first phone with a slide-out landscape keyboard and the first time it's outsourced the design (that we are aware of), in this case to HTC.
As with most other Windows Mobile phones, SE has put a skin over the top, in this case a patented nine-panel interface.
"The nine panel eco system puts the user in total control of the primary experiences available on the phone and allows consumers to personalise the panel interface to suit their needs and lifestyle," gloated Sony Ericsson's Rikko Sakaguchi.
With Sony Ericsson's rather poor performance in recent times, many have speculated that, if the X1 doesn't meet expectations, then it could be the company's last attempt at the high-end segment of the market.
SE also recently announced the availability of a free SDK tool for the phone which will allow developers to take advantage of the new interface.
The handset will be available in other markets across Europe, Asia and Latin America throughout Q4 2008. Availability dates for the rest of the world, including the US, China and Russia, will be announced by local markets in the coming months. µ
I already in bed with Nokia E71 and no regrets.
I think Sony Erisson is quite silly. Always show the phone not immediate ready for market. User needs to wait for 6 months. At the time it arrives, that phone is not competitive any more. They never get this right.
It is very encouraging to see these windows mobile pdas/ smartphones from regular mobile phone companies in very impressive sleek small form factors. Earlier devices from O2 , Vodaphone, T-mobile and other OEMs have been very crude and bulky. Iphone , blackberry , Omnia , nokia n series have just moved the bar up . Wish this phone had a 5 or 8 megapixel decent camera as well , as sony ericsson phones have always had better camera and music functions.
I hope my P910 holds another month before I get my hands on this beauty. Unfortunately, I think the only buyers will be people who actually use the devices for their intended purpose.

To make it a good financial success for SE, they would have to dumb it down, lock it down, blackmail the users and put a mirror on the back, so that people can score chicks with them like that other "smart phone"
A slight correction to one comment in the article that stated the X1 is designed by HTC; HTC are manufacturing the handset for Sony, but it was designed almost fully by Sony's engineers, not HTC's.
