MORE THAN 80 percent of new malware gets past the most popular anti-virus software.

According to a report from the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team, AusCERT, the most popular desktop antivirus applications simply "don't work".

General manager of AusCERT Graham Ingram said that this was not because the Antivirus software was defective, but because crackers were designing their Trojans and viruses to bypass detection.

He said that the "bad guys" were testing their malicious code against the antivirus products to make sure they were undetectable.

Apparently, the less popular AV software was slightly better at picking up dodgy malware, presumably because the criminals didn't test it against them. But Ingram said that the overall average figure of undetected malware of 60 percent was "worrying".
