A WEBSITE which provides information for parents who care for small children is suing Google after the search engine suddenly downgraded it.

The outfit, KinderStart.com, threw its toys out of the pram after the site dropped its ranking without any warning in March last year, causing it to fall from 10 million hits a month to just three million.

The company alleges that Google erected invisible barriers that divert consumers elsewhere when they type in a search.

Gregory Yu, a San Mateo attorney representing KinderStart.com, said that if there was a human behind Google pulling some levers, people should find out and that should be transparent to the public.

He added that if there was a improper process or fault with the search engine, it should be opened up by the court so that everyone can get a dekko at it working. Google has not explained what happened yet.
