Chinese man buys MIG from eBay

Beijing mandarins unsure if it is a banned item
Tuesday, 2 May 2006, 08:57
A CHINESE BUSINESSMAN has created a quandary for Beijing mandarins after buying a MiG-21f jet fighter on eBay

Zhang Cheng splashed out $24,730 for the fully working MiG 21 and wants to install it as decoration in an empty space at his offices.

The Beijing News said that Zhang told them he liked to collect valuable items and this one would make an interesting conversation piece.

The Jet last flew in 1995 when it was decommissioned by the Czech military but is supposed to be in working order. The problem for Beijing is whether or not it is an arms shipment, in which case it will probably be embraced by the glorious People's Republic, a potential terrorist weapon, which would be banned, or a luxury good, in which case it will be taxed.

It is more likely it will cost Zhang a fair bit to help Chinese customs men to help make up their minds.

More on Fox here, some of which may be true. ยต
