AN AUSTRALIAN MOTHER faces a possible jail sentence after trying to sell one of her babies on the Internet.

The 39-year-old unnamed woman struck a $6000 (US) deal with a New York couple for the child after placing a notice on a web site connecting surrogate mothers and sperm and embryo donors with prospective parents.

The woman sought parents for her child while she was still pregnant - a pregnancy she says was the result of being raped. However, when the baby girl was born she decided she wanted to keep it - as you do. She told Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper: "The moment she was born, and handed to me I knew then there was no way I could give her away."

Obviously deciding the woman was fairly bonkers, the Department of Human Services in Melbourne took the child into care, where she remains.

The woman was charged in April with two offences under the Australian Adoption Act, 1984. She pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned until July 24th. She faces a possible two years in the clink.

Here's the Herald Sun story. µ
