Days of free demo DVDs on magazines over

Sony pulls the plug on Official Playstation Magazine

THE DAYS of getting free DVDs and CDs on magazines might be coming to a close.

Sony has killed off its propaganda organ the Official Playstation magazine claiming that it has ceased to be relevant to the buying public.

One of the big selling points of Official Playstation was the fact that, like many print magazines, it came with a free demo disk.

However Sony marketing VP Peter Dille told Electronista that now that the Playstation Network will be offering web browsing and free downloads, the DVD has become a thing of the past.

The magazine was part of a deal between Sony and publisher Ziff-Davis and has been around since the first Playstation hit the streets. Its last issue will be January. It seems that if the trend against the demo disk is true, then no one seems to have told Sony's rival Microsoft.

Its Official Xbox Magazine, also has a demo disc, and has been doing quite well despite the arrival of Xbox Live in 2002.
