Infineon starts sampling 512Mbit DDR2 memory

Memory for 2004
Wednesday, 19 March 2003, 11:04
Infineon-apos-s-ddr2-die MASSIVE MEMORY COMBINE Infineon said it has started internal qualification of DDR-2 chips, which it said will start off with data rates per pin of 400Mbps (megabits per second), 533Mbps and 666Mbps. That means that modules using the 533Mbps rate would deliver a bandwidth of 4.3Gbps, the Dramurai claimed today.

The JEDEC compliant DDR2 chips use a 110 nanometer memory process, will be aimed at the server, workstation and high end PC/notebook marketplace, and will be configured as quad bank DRAMs (dynamic random access memories).

The chips will also include some fancy footwork including a pre-fetch size of four bits, differential strobe, and variable data output impedance adjustment, said Infineon.

DDR2 memory chips will arrive in 2004, it said.

The firm also said it has released engineering samples of 1GB DDR SO-DIMMs for the notebook market, modules which include eight one gigabit chips, and which use a 200 pin connector and dual 512mbit dies in a single package.

It also said it has expanded its mobile-RAM family with a 512 megabit chp, which samples right now at $40 per chip. µ
