AMD majors on 64-bit platform at CeBIT

THE SMALLER CHIP COMPANY than Intel is, is hogging the stands of various mobo firms at this year's CeBIT with almost endless iterations of the Opteron and the Athlon 64.

The firm took time out to talk to the INQUIRER this morning on a whirlwind trip of one of its stands, in Hall 22. This exhibits lots of different products from the AMD stable but while there we caught a glimpse of the great man himself.

Hector-hides--align--leftAlthough, being a retiring soul, he tried to hide behind someone else when he saw our flash light, err.. flash.

As well as a massive wall of K8 motherboards, AMD was also displaying a very big Fujitsu Siemens Opteron server.

On display too were several Athlon64 computer systems for desktops and for the notebook market.

John Crank, desktop product manager, said that it seemed as if "Intel was trying to copy AMD, yet again" with its earlier launch of the Centrino. AMD had managed to pull the launch of a range of low cost and low thermal notebook chips out of the bag first.

Here are the photographs we've captured so far.

We couldn't help noticing this machine was running Win64 for AMD

We also noticed Opteron machines running at Tyan's, at MSI and at Gigabyte's stand. Asus' stand is so big we haven't had a chance to check that out yet. Nor have we been yet to Hall One, where AMD is opteroning like there is no tomorrow. Trouble is, god willing, there will be a tomorrow, so we'll tax Intel and AMD about X86 systems, yet again... rather sadly.
