Mozilla shows off Lightning

It is only a model
Wednesday, 28 September 2005, 08:51
OPEN SAUCE outfit the Mozilla Foundation is showing off its latest cunning plan for merging its Sunbird device synchronisation and offline calendar support into Thunderbird.

Currently Sunbird can't integrate calendar and email functionality with Thunderbird. The project, called Lightning, has had a team assigned to it.

The big idea is that the combined application will be more attractive to corporate users. Although the Mozzarella Foundation are not saying it, it does seem that it is gunning for Microsoft Outlook.

According to the road map, Lightning 0.1, is planned for release in November. Later releases of Lightning will include better Thunderbird integration, including linking emails and tasks.

Later there will be added support for localisation, device synchronisation and offline calendar access.
