I wrote a story on microprocessors once. Paper would have been better - The Evil Dr Spinola
SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has issued a series of useful tips on its help page which it claims can speed up its flagship operating system Vista.
It appears that punters have been complaining that Vista is about as sluggish as a pavement in Hamburg after heavy rainfall.
But that is not the fault of the operating system, claims the helpful Volish help page. Apparently all PCs get slower over time because you naughty users fill it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet.
Microsoft's techniques to speed up Vista include deleting programs you never use and limiting the number of programs at start-up and er, that's it.
Well pretty useful advice. Much like suggesting that you could speed up your Vista machine by wiping the operating system and installing Ubuntu.
You can read Vole's helpful tips here. µ
This is much like the "wonderful" idea of Vista boot times...
If you want it to boot from cold faster, boot from hibernate instead.

or the old joke:
"doctor, doctor, my arm hurts when I raise it above my shoulder"
"well don't do that then"
Can you play all the latest games on Ubuntu?

No?

Not much use to the average PC enthusiast then is it.

Linux has it's place, but its just never going to be a standard in itself.

The constant Vista bashing on this site is ammusing though if just for the relentless biased 'journalism'
I can even get over the starting line. cant get drivers to work for my hd2600.
...that the obvious way to speed up Vista would be to upgrade to WindowsXP. Silly me.
"Restarting a PC is a good way to clear out its memory and ensure that any errant processes and services that started running get shut down."

Shouldn't the OS do that.
I must not be "edgy" enough to see why this website constantly rips Vista.

I came off a highly tweaked XP Pro install directly into full-blown Vista Ultimate install with almost no tweaking and I haven't noticed it lacking in performance.

In fact, I dare say it's faster than XP Pro. It's still the same 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM. I've been running Vista since the RC1 Beta and I've never had driver problems, crashes, or program errors (that I didn't cause myself).

Seriously, I think you guys just fail at using Vista.
It looks like there are more tips on the site than you indicated. Most of which would work with any version of Windows, but still useful to a non-power user,

Seriously guys what's with all the hate targeted at Vista lately? Did it steal the radio out of your car or cut in front of you in traffic?

I don't mind if you don't like the OS and M$ made a huge mistake pushing it out the door before it was ready but (believe it or not) there are those of us using it and it's working well.

I run on WinXP, Ubuntu, and Vista so cut us a little slack eh?

Love the site....

"Can you play all the latest games on Ubuntu?"

I've been playing the Orange Box (Portal, TF2) on Ubuntu just fine, thanks. I dual boot. I've noticed over time I boot Vista less and less.

It takes longer, it stops me doing things, tells me my administratro (?) has set up policies to disallow some actions, proudly tells me that it's blocking services I want and is generally a pain. Ubuntu works a charm.
This is dishonest, factually challenged and really isn't much of a "story". So Microsoft has "tips" for people who aren't full-time computer geeks? People who just bought their first computer or don't know that much about a PC OS in general. I don't see why that supports your anti-Vista position?

TheINQ has painted itself into a corner because of how quickly and viciously you attacked Vista in the beginning. As the OS has matured and improved you continued bashing and now when more and more of your readers question your bias you have no choice but to keep on the same path.

Now you've reached a point where you are attacking everything Vista and only reporting what enforces your positions. That's bad journalism. It's quite similar the Bush administration's misuse of (dis)information. I'm not a MS lover by any stretch. I have really enjoyed this site for quite a long time but I am losing respect for the quality of reporting.
why are you dual booting? Oh, yeah you need to to play games...kinda killed your own argument..lol.

I agree on cutting vista down. Too much already. I was on highly tweeked xp pro and moved to vista home premium, tweeked it like i did with xp and it runs the same fps as I was getting on xp with cod4. Cant complain here at all. The pop up security boxes were annoying but that took 2 seconds to fix....'Allow'...no regrets.
I run a dual core 6850, 8 gigs of ram and vista 64 bit. It has times when it seems to take forever to do something. I have checked the processes and system idle process 90+%. How can that be? Shouldn't the task manager show everything going on? Here I sit tapping my fingers...
Here is their exact wording.
"Don’t assume you have to sit there and tap your fingers while you wait for programs to open and tasks to complete. With these tips, you just might be able to turn your tortoise into a hare—or at least a faster tortoise."
You might as well as said, sure I can play games on my Ubuntu box, I just swap out the HDD with the one that has Vista installed on it...

Isn't upgrading normally about getting more?

I mean 98->2000/XP = more speed, more stability etc...
XP -> Vista = less speed, more memory, same function, less drivers...

What's wrong in the latest update?
Time to move to Linux, it's far more stable and good looking, less memory etc....
Sadly it only lacks the latest games, other then that it's the PERFECT replacement to a long overdue Windows.
2000/XP was the best, next version is called Ubuntu...and costs NOTHING!!! :-)
These tips are nothing really new

They have been told since Windows XP was released...

Worthless
Vista (or even XP) is really not necessary to play games. I use Ubuntu and am able to play lots of games using programs such as Wine or Cedega (winex). So give up that voleware already.
"I've been playing the Orange Box (Portal, TF2) on Ubuntu just fine, thanks."

he said the LATEST games... orange box came out like 5 months ago
If gaming is a excuse to install Vista, then buy a console instead and stick with open source. The costs will be about the same.

Oh and "anyone with a half brain" can see that the game developers/publishers choose in which OSs they will run. That's not a Linux fault, neither a Vista feature.
I have been running Vista32 since July last year and love it! So much so that I went to Vista64 and guess what? I love it. I have never had a problem with hardware or drivers. I use Ubuntu in my LAB and guess what? Its harder to install than Vista!
I'm not a Microsoft groupy but if you take your time and learn about the OS you might find that it really does work!
Would all this advice stop the hard disk thrashing that's so widely reported?
Many of you say I have just upgrade to an X core, thousand GHz processor, 2 GB RAM machine and Vista runs just as fine as XP. I mean how stupid do you have to be to shell out a few hundreds of dollars/euros to get... nothing? Well, maybe a little eye candy. But the saddest thing is that many don't realize that might not be the may reason for the Inq's bias against the OS: it has been much talked (written) about the fact that it is a total spyware and must be activated as many times as MS will like to. I mean how many of you Vista fan boys would be OK with buying a car and keeping the keys to it @ the trader? Sounds far fetched? Think about it!
First off, to anyone saying Vista is as fast as XP, im sorry but your XP install must have been laden with viruses and spyware. The fact is Vista is much slower. Video driver performance is usually about 10-15% lower when i play games in vista on my 8800gt. Silly MS tries to hide problems instead of fixing them, such as the missing boot logo....Linux is great, Ubuntu is fun, takes more to get games to work but meh. Basically, unless you *need* to run a game under DX10, no reason to even boot into vista.
"With these tips, you just might be able to turn your tortoise into a hare—or at least a faster tortoise."

i'm confused... by 'tortoise', are they referring to a pc running vista prior to these optimizations?

LOL.
I'd have to disagree. Linux is not in the position Microsoft is in because they didn't particpate in illegal tactics to become a monopoly. Microsoft did go through a criminal trial for a reason. They were nasty about what they did and how they did it and they got caught, but not before they had damaged the industry.

Your comments are simply saying that Linux will never be a standard because Microsoft' damaged the industry in such a was as to make it irrecoverable.

Realistically Microsoft's model for software development will be overwhelmed by the Open Source model. It is inevitable. The Open Source model is much more productive. What happens with that cause is the effect that Linux will advance considerably.

Expect a doubling of Linux on the desktop in 2008, if not more. With nearly 50 million users of Linux world wide it is still difficult to compete with Microsoft. But we all know now about their nasty vendor lock in and other less principled tactics. We all know they acted like criminals and participated in criminal activities and we know they were caught and tried and found guilty.

So, rather than shit on Linux how about getting a real perspective of what's going on and how it will come to be.
FILES = 99
BUFFERS = 99

That's it !!! ;)

Or have I misunderstand anything!? :)

To make VISTA faster, if it works stable, spend a the best BUS controller on a very good MoBo, a >500W power supply, a fast GPU with more than 256MB, have 4 to 32 GB DDR2/3 memory and a fast Dual Core Core CPU with an fast HDD's like an Raptor!

Than you can work with IE and Outlook and/or stupid games! ;)

Frank

PS: Cow an Chicken (British Cartoons) would say:"Is this stupid enough"! :) :)
