Korea is insisting we do a press release

The perils of PR, Microsoft Word and Google
Friday, 15 August 2003, 21:20
WORD DOCUMENTS are dangerous things but apparently even more dangerous when you put them on the World Wide Web.

Google parses .DOC files so if you're for example, a spinning agency called HWH Public Relations, which handles mega-company Samsung, any summary document gets indexed right up there.

But the file summary info in Word is used by Google to build the HTML title for the document. Alas.

The press release in Word format can be found here, and has as its title "Samsung proudly announces its sponsorship of the 2002 Acura Classic".

Use Google to search, on this string, and you'll see that the file summary information is right up there at the top.

It reads "Korea is insisting on a press release for the upcoming NAB show".

Perhaps indicating that there was a certain reluctance on behalf of its PR agency to go type this one up and distribute it.

Ah, the perils of PR. It's a dangerous, dangerous game. And another thing, from the screen shot below. The Google ad on the right says "Write a Press Release", and links to www.writeprofessionallylookingpressreleases.com which will never get any page views because the domain name is all clunkety-clinked up. Sheesh, as my old girlfriend would say. ยต
