Boffins make improvements to LEDs

Brighter, slimmer and cheaper
Friday, 18 May 2007, 10:22
UCLA BOFFINS are set to make an announcement that will turn the LED market on its head and make the way for brighter, slimmer and cheaper screens.

After much work behind bubbling test-tubes of green fluid, the boffins have managed to create a record for the highest lumens per watt ever recorded for a red phosphorescent LED. According to Network World, their technique involves a new combination of plastic, or polymer, infused liquid. The LED was made at half the current cost.

The boffins will be showing off their new LEDs at a shin-dig for the very clever run by the Society for Information Display.

Red LEDs can manage 12 lumens per watt, but the UCLA boffins have managed 18 lumens per watt with something they are calling a PLED. The new technology, has been licensed by Canon, should be available to consumers in about three years. ยต
