Mitsubishi unveils TV with lasers

LED backlighting gets hardcore
Tuesday, 8 January 2008, 11:42

MITSUBISHI HAS FINALLY lifted the curtain on its "laser" TV technology.

In true Dr Evil style, Shubi reckons that it owns 75 per cent of the manufacturing market for LED lasers, and so bringing the technology to TVs was a no brainer.

LED lasers are brighter and stronger than conventional LEDs, making for backlit displays that are brighter, more intense and have better contrast, apparently. The technology isn't groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it will add a nice iteration to existing LED backlit technology. See the pictures here.

No sharks were harmed in the making of the TV, we are reliably informed, despite repeated requests for "sharks with frickin' laser beams." µ

Laser Based LED TV

As far as I know, LEDs are supposed to be a very energy-efficient tech, but wouldn't using lasers make it eat more power? Just wondering...
