Radeon 9000, 9700 "won't run on Windows 98"

Disappointing if true
Thursday, 25 July 2002, 03:51
Update 12:16 BST Nevertheless, have a look at this page, forwarded by a reader, and you will see there do appear to be drivers for the 9000 Pro at least... Curioser, curioser.

A POSTING ON the Rage3D forums appears to confirm that ATI's up and coming 9000 Pro and 9700 won't run on Windows 98, on Windows 95 and on Windows NT.

The forum posting confirms that the boards, which are expected to be released to vendors and big system integrators in the next few weeks, won't have driver support for the operating systems, narrowing the options for consumers.

The posting points to an ATI page which gives the system requirements for the up-and-coming cards.

While it's unsurprising that Win95 and NT aren't supported, the omission of Windows 98 is potentially more serious.

Not everyone is so far convinced that they should switch to WinXP from Windows 98, although, of course, all new consumer PCs have the eyecandy installed as default.

Here's the post on Rage 3D. ยต
