Brits left out of HD war

Who wins in Blighty matters not

US news sites are awash with stories this morning of top bargains to be had on the high definition front. See here and here as just two examples.

The respective warring factions - Blu-ray and HD-DVD - are both offering mail-in coupons with their respective players, offering five (count'em) free movies with the purchase of a player. Additionally, Amazon is offering an additional three titles, gratis, with purchases of the PS3 and Xbox 360 HD-DVD player - making for eight free discs with each player, a stunning bargain given the relatively low pricing of these options for HD playback.

But, in a predictable twist, such promotions for the UK are nowhere to be found. Neither consortium offers the five disc mail-in, and there are no bargains or deals to be found on the Amazon website, either. Indeed, Amazon is selling the Xbox 360 HD-DVD for £20 more than it's commonly found for on the high street, which is something of a turn up for the books.

In the war of movie formats, it seems the US is the only battleground. Why not screw the studios at their own game and just import the kit you want, buy Stateside movie releases, and kill the British industry? Apparently, it's all the rage. µ
