A MULTI-MILLION search engine project for Europe has received a blow after one of the main backers has pulled out.

The search engine was the brain child of the French government, which is a little concerned about the power that the Americans have over the Internet.

Its idea is to build a new search engine that would match and compete with Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

The French managed to get a few EU friends on its side, but now it appears that the Germans have got cold feet.

Apparently the reason that Germany is pulling out of the project is because the French are getting pretty stubborn about the basic design of the €1 billion to €2 billion project.

The French want a sophisticated search engine that could search audio, video and other multimedia data. The Germans wanted a more precise next-generation text-based search engine.
