Intel shutters fab for two weeks

To cut expenses, report says
Sunday, 4 August 2002, 12:07
A REPORT IN Israel daily H'Aretz said that Intel will close down its Pentium fabrication plant in Israel for two weeks, between the 13th and the 28th of September.

This is the Qyriat Gat site - which could be the place of the very famous Philistine, Goliath, which makes it all the more interesting.

A travel guide tells the INQ that if you skirt the northern perimeter you will get to a gravel road which leads to a Philistine city and could be the birthplace of Goliath.

The report said that an Intel representative has confirmed the shutdown of the plant for a two week period, saying that the move was to shave expenses as well as to upgrade equipment.

Workers will take a compulsory two week holiday, the report adds.

The move is unusual for Intel, but common practice for other semiconductor companies, particularly memory manufacturers.

They routinely shut their fabs in order to keep supplies to a mininum.

You can find the report, in Hebrew, here.

Craig Barrett is famous for last year saying that the Israel-Palestine conflict is a short term problem, although he didn't estimate the length of the time it might take to resolve, now Chipzilla was on the case.

A Palestinian site here, accuses the home town where Fab 18 is of being "ethnically cleansed" and claims the Intel factory was built on the "looted land" of al-Faluja. µ
