Asustek experiments with bamboo computers
ASUSTEK wants to release an eco-friendly laptop made out of bamboo.
The Asus Eco Book has a case made out of laminated bamboo strips. Since there is a lot of bamboo in the world and it grows fast it makes it an ideal renewable resource for making PCs out of, thinks Asustek.
The processing does mean a few toxins get into the mix, but generally bamboo makes for an eco-friendly alternative.
An early version has been shown to hacks at Reuters and engineers are checking to see if the bamboo can take the heat.
Asustek has made a leather computer before, but this is the first time that it has had a go at making one out of a plant.
The downside to a laptop made out of bamboo is that it could be eaten by pandas. In addition to the fact that they can do a Nintendo while doing a handstand, the panda only eats bamboo.
So far the number of panda related laptop thefts has been slight but this could grow if Asustek starts making them out of panda snacks. ยต

This is an encouraging first step, but inevitably, we'll need to build completely biological computers.

There was a WarHammer 40k race which built entire space-ships out of biological material, so I don't think an all organic laptop is too far-fetched.

I know this is a long-shot, right now, but with the budding fields of nanotechnology and stem-cell research converging, we'll soon see artificial neurons with the electrical transmission speeds approaching fast FSB speeds (although FSB's keep ramping up).

Hopefully, before all the glaciers melt and civilization is destroyed (for now), we'll have the ability to create complete vat-grown computers with personalities, specializations, likes, dislikes, etc.

Then, there will be hell to pay, as the computers will demand autonomy.
Please stop saying they are eco friendly. Pretty much no technology is eco friendly, in this case it is less eco unfriendly. Also pandas eat another kind of bamboo, the wet edition. This is the hard edition they make buildings of.
