Planar-ddr-2 MEMORY FIRM Infineon said it has started sampling 2GB memory modules using a planar design - and giving much flatter modules.

According to Infineon, this DDR-2 memory is intended for servers and the planar design, which is 4.1 millimetres thick, can give up to 10 per cent heat savings.

Infineon thinks these planar 2GB DIMMs will become the preferred density of server suppliers.

The modules use 36 single die 512Mbit chips which have 60 ball FBGA packahing, and which will operate at 400Mbit/s and 533Mbit/s. While Infineon also supplies 4GB DDR-2 DIMMs, they're not yet available in planar designs.

Volume production is slated for the second half of this year, said the firm. µ
