LA Times cans wikitorials

Too much foul language and porn
Tue Jun 21 2005, 07:57
A CUNNING plan by the Los Angeles Times to let readers rewrite the paper's editorials has been spiked after three days.

The newspaper had been inspired by the Wikipedia to allow readers to modify editorials and develop them with views and links.

Some people were behind the scheme and did actually do some work on the Wikitorials. But unfortunately the first editorial, which called for a better defined plan to withdraw troops from Iraq, was flooded with swear words and porn pictures.

The Times had hoped that either it might be creating a new form of opinion journalism, or an embarrassing failure. It looks like it managed the latter quite well.

The Times told Business Week that the feature would stay offline indefinitely while it looked at what happened and how to fix it.

[Never listen to readers, Ed.
