Intel's channel gets to stick with ATX

Only OEMs will have to bother with BTX
Sun Oct 29 2006, 16:43
CHIP GIANT Intel told its customers that its channel platform group (CPG) and its digital enterprise group (DEG) have come to a decision about the problematical BTX chassis design.

The blokes have had a conflab which they call a re-assessment of the the "current market environment", and have cut the Gordian Knot by deciding not to make BTX stuff for the channel, as part of a "small form factor" strategy.

It will carry on simplifying the SKUs for the channel and in any case low power Core 2 Duo microprocessors somewhat mitigate the need for BTX as part of an "acoustical value proposition".

Yes, they really do talk like this.

But Intel will support BTX and ATX - with ATX for the channel and OEMs will get support for both ATX and BTX. This is, of course, an Intel climbdown and one which it has been preparing for years. To call it a u-turn would be like describing an s-bend as a corkscrew. µ
