Intel chipset shortage touted

PCs start to sell again

THERE IS a shortage of Intel chipsets after demand for PCs suddenly started to pick up, it's being claimed.

It seems that bargain hunters, who were waiting for Intel and AMD to slash their prices before buying, are now showing up at the shops with cash in hand.

According to Asus the sharp rise has caused headaches for component makers who can't keep up.

The main shortage is with the 965 chipset The 965 chipsets have been in the shops since June and work with the super soaraway Core 2 Duo. Chipzilla set aside two advanced chip plants to manufacture its new 965 chipset family and ensure a supply and apparently these are flat out, but just simply not enough.

Gigabyte agrees saying that the shortage exists among several chipsets in the 965 family, citing the G965 chipset for mainstream desktop PCs, in particular.
