PC pioneer tries for online spreadsheets

Another Bricklin in the web-app wall
Sat Jun 10 2006, 22:51
BORES OF ALL kinds know that Dan Bricklin begat VisiCalc, which was the spreadsheet that begat the success of the IBM PC that begat the phenomenon that is… well, you know the rest.

Anyhow, as if the charge sheet wasn't long enough, Bricklin is now attempting a second coming as purveyor of open-source online spreadsheets. Think of all the fun you've had with Excel, 1-2-3 and all the rest. Why wouldn't you want to take it away when your PC isn't handy? Right?

News.com reports that "social software company" - don't know either -- Socialtext will "redistribute and co-develop" WikiCalchttp://danbricklin.com/log/, the web-based spreadsheet mentioned earlier.

Sounds promising but the problem is that a certain company just trod its size elevens into erstwhile virgin turf earlier this week with Google Spreadsheets. As if that weren't enough, there are plenty of other offerings attempting to do the same from Zohohttp://www.zoho.com/ to Ajax 13http://www.ajaxlaunch.com/.
