US PRESIDENTIAL candidate Rudy Giuliani may have the odd skeleton in his closet but when it comes to riding a Segway he takes a smart, pragmatic approach. Giuliani visited a Segway factory yesterday in New Hampshire to make a stump speech, but made the sage decision not to pander to press and photographers by getting on one of the terrifying vehicles.
At last year’s Intel Developer Conference in San Francisco, INQUIRER staff visiting a local bar, for lunch and rest from their busy schedules, were shocked to see a man come crashing off his Segway, sustaining a sickening blow to the head.
Closer to home for Giuliani, George W. Bush took a drop the first time he tried out the personal transporter. In fact, the only time this reporter has seen the systems in practical use is with booth babes (© Fernando Cassia) dispensing handouts while hovering on these systems as if they were bucking broncos in ultra slow-motion.
The Sinclair C5 was so slow that it might have got you the odd unmerited arrest for kerb crawling, but at least it was safe-ish. µ
Bush fell because he hadn't switched on the gyroscope that is suppose to make the thing idiot-proof I understand, he temporarily forgot he's the definition of one.
And if you judge the safety of devices on drunks trying to use them.. well I'm guessing you don't drive then? nor walk? that sidewalk hurt many a drunk.
the bbc put them to great use in their television coverage of golf tournaments. cameramen with steadycams gliding around the course effortlessly on segways
...Giuliani just didn't want to be seen as a total hypocrite to New Yorkers, who thanks to the inaction of Mr. I Kicked A** During Nine-Eleven, found Segways in a legal black hole here that Mayor Bloomberg also has failed to address. Amusingly, the NYPD just bought ten Segways. Nice to see New York City's Finest setting a good example by ignoring the laws, regulations and statutes they are upholding.
After echoing someone else's fears, you then declare their negative reaction as the proper response when encountering something new. Nice.

Isn't it ironic that a tech site is promoting fear and ignorance of a mobility technology that's actually safer far than bikes?
