THE SHARP EARED FOLKS over at Linus TechTips have made the startling discovery that Sid Meier may have borrowed a bit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail when he designed his Civilization II game.
While up at 3am in the morning watching random Monty Python clips on YouTube the eponymous Linus found himself noticing a similarity between the scene where the Black Knight is battling King Arthur and a Wav file in Civ 3 here.
He was so excited that he nearly posted the news on his bog straight away, because that was his idiom. He didn't and instead waited until he was in a better state of mind, well the morning anyway.
Having heard the two clips, we think they are similar, too. But we were up all night polishing our coconuts for a long ride in the morning.
Linus wonders if there are similar sound samplings in other games that are borrowed from Monty Python. Maybe they had been carried there by a migratory African swallow. µ

Don't forget the "click-bzzt-pschh" audio clip that's been used everywhere, from explosions to planes landing to automatic doors in space stations to Doom's final level (when the monster "cubes" were shot). I think the sound originally comes from a car's boot opening.
In the business, there is something called "Stock Audio", much like Stock Photography, it can be sold to many different studios. This also explains why many of the gunshots you hear in old westerns and made-for-tv movies sound very similar. There is no news here, none at all.
I would be more surprised that anyone played Civ 3 enough to recognize the sounds reflexively than that a sound was lifted from The Holy Grail.
The link to the site says its on Civ 2 not Civ 3!!!
It's an African and not European swallow?
