3 aims Skype at business

Loads of ways to make free calls
Monday, 9 June 2008, 16:01

IT SEEMS that mobile operator, 3 UK, has noticed that it's not just consumers who are attracted to free mobile Skype calls. So it's just introduced mobile Skype for business.

The idea is to create tariffs that will appeal to small businesses (sub 20 persons) and the self-employed but throw in the free Skype calling too.

This will prove particularly attractive to those with business contacts in other countries where there is a 3 network. Australia is a good example, here. You could effectively be calling clients for free via Skype.

It appears that these post-pay tariffs – which the company calls 'Mix and match', don't require you to keep topping up you credit by £10 per month. If you don't do that on pre-pay with 3, then your free Skype calls disappear.

There's also free regular mobile calls if you use your 3 phone to call another 3 UK customer. Better still, it's possible to call back to the UK while roaming on an overseas network and the call will cost the same as if you were in the UK.

In fact, it will merely be deducted from your normal ration of paid-for minutes. This roaming facility is called '3 like home' and details are available here.

Also good news is that you don't necessarily have to use the custom Skypephone to make the free Skype calls. You can do so if you pick a Nokia N95 or a HTC TyTN II, for example.

In fact, the INQ can't see why any individual who wants to take advantage of any of these competitive tariffs can't sign up to Mix and match. 3 even throw in free instant messaging.

Given how expensive Skype's own Skype for mobile service is, these tariffs are definite bargains. µ

Don't Be Fooled

The Skype mobile application makes a local call to route you to the Internet, hence you pay a mobile local call rate. Contrast this to Fring which makes a wifi connection to your own router and does true VOIP to make truly FREE calls Skype to Skype....

Don't get conned.
