COMPUTERWORLD has run an astonishing puff for Apple that states unequivocally that 'OSX Leopard Beats Vista for Corporate Satisfaction.'
"Corporate users of Apple Inc.'s Leopard operating system are more than five times more likely to say that they are 'very satisfied' with the OS than business users of Windows Vista , a research firm said last week," shouts the rag.
The report cited states that in a survey last month of 2,200 US corporate computer users, 53 per cent of those using Mac OS X 10.5 reported that they were 'very satisfied' with the operating system.
Of those using Windows XP or Windows Vista, however, just 40 per cent of the former and only eight per cent of the latter said they were 'very satisfied'.
According to Computerworld, this apparently proves that Apple 'continues to set the standard for corporate customer satisfaction' and that 'corporate buying plans for Macs remain at historically high levels, indicating that users like what Apple's doing.'
Seven per cent of those questioned said they planned to buy Apple laptops in the next 90 days.
Well, this all sounds very lovely for Jobs' Mob until we look at the market share figures from the same report.
Of the 2,200 respondents, 73 per cent plan to buy Windows XP or Vista machines in the next three months. A rough calculation shows that this means 1,606 companies going for Microsoft and a rather tragic 154 going with the fruit-based outfit.
When it comes to the user satisfaction figures that form the basis for Computerworld's gushing headline, yet another rough calculation shows that 771 companies are very satisfied with Windows and, err, 82 are very satisfied with Leopard.
Which all goes to prove you shouldn't believe anything you read. ยต

Title is misleading..
OK, I read the article to try to make sense of the figures, as I wasn't sure what you meant by your last paragraph.

Of those using OS X, more were satisfied than those who were dissatisfied.

Of those using Windows, there were more dissatisfied than satisfied.

No-one's disputing that, it's in the article, so fine.

More people plan to buy a Windows machine than a Mac for the workplace, which, really, isn't suprising. There's no evidence to suggest that Apple are making significant inroads into this market, so fair enough.

But your last paragraph states:

"yet another rough calculation shows that 771 companies are very satisfied with Windows and, err, 82 are very satisfied with Leopard."

So all that proves is there are more people using Windows than OS X. Which... isn't really news?

If they interviewed, say, 100 Mac users and 100 Windows users, and more people said they preferred Windows, then yes, that would mean something. Because, in such a scenario, there are an equal number of Windows and Mac users.

But the fact is, of the repondants, there were more Windows users than Mac users. And *still*, Mac satisfaction came out on top.

So really, honestly, the "gushing" headline (which is simply a statement of fact, it's not like they fiddled the stats) is correct after all.

Or have I missed something?
> "Nine times more users satisfied with Windows than OSX"

That would imply the direct opposite of the main thrust of the article, wouldn't it?
This is a great article that most Apple fanboys will choose to ignore.

It is interesting to see that anyone would be satisfied with Vista. I would take OSX over Vista any day. But when comparing XP to OSX, well, it's a no brainer.
Apple's reality distortion field marketing in practice yet once again!
It must be working since Apple is doing fairly well financially and sales-wise.
With math and average and polls you can make the out come as many ways you want to show them. It is all in the way you show. This type of logic can make either side look good and show noting.
Be careful trying to extrapolate figures from Data.

Where in the report does it state that a respondent has to use one operating system exclusively?

All 2,200 respondents may already use OSX. Many maybe 'very satisfied'. But they may also not be satisfied enough not to consider purchase a Windows (or other) operating system.

Firstly, what a load of balls.

Secondly, why is the title completely misleading? You say in the article that more people are satisfied with OSX, but the title says more people are satisfied with Windows...
Not to mention those other stats come from Computerworld, which is often pro-Apple, not to mention having more than a few "articles" based on unsubstantiated rumors.
The date on your article is March 31. I feel certain you intended this to be an April 1 piece, right?
Title seems to contridicate (spelling?) What the actual story is about....sounds like apple fan boys are starting businesses with the shiny things.
These polls are completely useless. Depending on how you ask the question you can get someone who is against something to agree. Then comes these percentages. A poll is conducted of a very slim portion of people and then all of a sudden "80% of people enjoy cheese".

I mean really. They surveyed 2,200 people. That somewhere around 0.0007% of the U.S. population. Some how by surveying this limited portion of America, we can determine what the rest of America thinks?

Bottom line. Polls can not be trusted.
Graphics related companies are the only niche for Apple computers. Even Magazines and Newspapers still rely on Windows-based PCs to do their grunt work.

That said, those who push for the Macs for graphics work, learned to use their tools while using a Mac... as with those who learned their job with PCs. The difference is,(corporate and personal) Mac users are more prone to despise a PC, when they have probably used them very little (or even care to).

It's comparing apples to oranges, depending on the user-base. A large company couldn't use all macs and still maintain a wide variety of applications and users.

You may spend 500k on a bus that has a bathroom, bedroom and enough room to party... but not everyone wants to ride in it all the time, even though it's convenient. You can buy a sports car for the same money and be very satisfied with it, but you've only got one extra seat.
I hope they are their own personal computers because there's no way Apple equipment should be used in a corporation.

The sheer fact of the abysmal warranty cover (offsite, sometime fix)should strike them from the list of possible suppliers, never mind the shoddy quality and high TCO.
If the corporates all hated Windows, then they would simply dump it.

The fact that they haven't suggests that some folk are happy enough.

I run Windows without any problems. Heck I supported it in a corporate environment without any significant problems.

I even run Vista on my home box without any significant problems, so it *is* good enough, for me. Everyone's different though.
whats with TheInquirer and their obsession with Windows vs OSX? You guys seem like the biggest Windows fanboi's out there, kinda degrading to your site, i can see why a lot of people have stopped reading. Are you ever going to provide a site without this bullshit?

AT adds: No. Live with it.

I hope you dont want me to believe that those two numbers add up to 2200
Just for reference, the back-of-the-envelope calculation of machine purchases in the article above gives Apple a 10% market share, which means that in the last 2 years they have doubled their share of the market... throughout the ten years before it was pegged at about 5%, and has been as low as 3%.

And what's more, they've done so off the back of a string of consistently good and stylish products - iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air. It's interesting that the old Microsoft strategy of "we'll do it second, but better" doesn't seem to be working so well anymore - it's been a while since we've seen something from them which improved on an Apple product.
There are three kind of people in the world;
ones that can count and ones that can't count.
which of the three are you?
Although your facility with words is poor, you should use them exclusively, and avoid even the mention of numbers.
Didn't you get it guys? This is an article for April Fools Day! You're all fooled :-).
Other than the operating system, Macs are just overpriced PCs in fancy cases.
yikes.

1.guys, I didn't do any math, but obviously what they are saying is that if you were to take the raw numbers (instead of percentages) of satisfied users of windows, they'd be far greater than satisfied users of Macs. This of course is not a valid way comparing the 2 groups in the manner implied.

2.I was going to do a diatribe on how only idiots say "statistics lie(show anything)!!". They don't, they merely need to be interpreted logically and carefully. HOWEVEVER, judging by the comments, INQ made it's point. Most of the readers here cannot interpret even these simples numbers properly. Sad.
