CHIP SHOP, Intel is preparing to invest a billion dollars in India over next three years or so.
The wonga will go on getting Indians to make more use of the interweb by delivering cheap, easy-to-use gadgets, which will be nothing like the OLPC laptop thingy, we presume.
According to The Times of India the outfit will team up with the likes of ASUS, HCL, Wipro and Zenith to deliver the gadgetry.
"We are focusing on a number of new initiatives for enabling easy availability of personal computers and broadband Internet in India," Intel technology India director- marketing and operations, John "Trampus" McClure said.
"We have committed to spend over a billion dollars spread over next three years plus."
He said first-time PC buyers now want, "lightweight products, that could run on battery for three to four hours, is easy to store and doesn't take too much space."
Intel will be banging the Wimax drum as loud as it can throughout the sub-contintent.
"This is the best technology to bridge the PC-broadband Internet gap in India. With three million broadband Internet subscription against a PC deployment of 35 million, India has the worst broadband-PC ratio in a large market," McClure said. µ
So they couldnt undermine the OLPC from inside (well not enough) so now they have to use other tactics.
