AMERICAN AIRLINES has launched its mobile broadband service.
Gogo provided by Aircell, means that punters travelling on American's Boeing 767-200 fleet can connect to the World Wide Wibble on non-stop flights between New York and San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Miami.
According to a press release, the service will be available on a total of 15 aircraft for a three to six month trial period. AA makes a big thing about being the first to give its customers full inflight Internet connectivity.
In comparison to the daylight robbery which is an internet connection at a airport terminal the price is quite reasonable, too. Aircell will charge $12.95 on flights of more than three hours duration.
Each paid Gogo session includes full Internet access. Unfortunately VOIP services are not available yet.
Gogo is powered by the Aircell air-to-ground (ATG) Broadband System, which runs over the telco's nationwide network. There are three antennas installed on the outside of the aircraft which connect to cell towers on the ground. ยต
Never flew so high!
I really liked ConneXion by Boeing when it was still available... something to pass the long transatlantic flights.

Yeah, right, AA is first.
If they are using the cell networks why can't we? Obvious I wouldn't want someone bantering on the phone but tethering my laptop and phone should be allowed...

Monopoly I say...
Does leaving a mobile phone switched on cause the airplane to crash, or was that all a load of baloney?

If the airplane can let me use the broadband cell, then I guess I can use my mobile phone too? Is that right?
1. Mobile phones do not interfere with fully funcioning airplane equipment.
2. You can't use your own mobile phone 3G Internet connection because the plane's altitute is out of reach of terrestrial antennas.
3. Yeah, that means that you can't call people either and that those people calling home inside an airborne airplane on 9/11 2001 are fake.
