This was probably the least up-to-the point presentation we have ever seen, as no solid details were forthcoming. You have to read so much between the lines. So we did.
When an ATI or AMD suit says 'innovation' they mean that both companies have bunch of patents and bunch of smart engineers that can and will help each other. They will make better products in the long term.
Growth is rather closer to the point. With ATI, AMD will be able to make more money - it got into the handheld business like it never could before and it got a portion of the graphics business that it can use to sell even more AMD CPUs.
The third buzzword is the lamest one as it focuses on choice. This means you have the choice to chose between the evil Intel and the nice AMD/ATI marriage. It sounds cute, but I guess you had that choice beforehand anyhow.
AMD wants to shake Intel where it hurts - on its Centrino platform, which really gets Intel serious popularity and money. ATI can make the graphics and chipset, probably even the wireless and Lan component of the future platform. AMD will supply the CPU and there you have DAAMIT's competitor. Nvidia is the only to fly in this ointment.
Both DAAMIT companies are staying super silent on their first mutual products or any such concrete things. ATI says it is committed to introducing its R580+ and RD600 as soon as possible, while AMD wants to launch its 4x4 by the end of the 2006. µ
