Seagate releases Savvio 15K line

2.5 inches of raw IO
Wednesday, 17 January 2007, 08:18
SEAGATE TOOK the next logical step in enterprise HDs yesterday with the launch of the Savvio 15K line.

Since Seagate takes an un-Intel like naming convention, basically one that makes sense, you can tell this is the new 2.5-inch line of 15K RPM HDs.

The whole point of these drives is not huge capacity but high IOs. In keeping with that, you can fit about six of these in a space where you could fit two 3.5-inch models, but they only come in 36 and 73GB capacities. In a situation where you could previously only mirror, you can now put in a full RAID6 array.

With the release of the Savvio 15K, Seagate has sounded the death knell of the enterprise 3.5 inch SAS/SCSI line. If you look out at the IBM and HP lines of servers, you will see how little call for the big drives there is left. Long live the new king. ยต
