Windows Server 2008 leaks onto interweb

Wibble wobble
Wednesday, 6 February 2008, 10:56

MICROSOFT WINDOWS Server 2008 has been leaked on the internet, three weeks ahead of the official worldwide launch date. This comes just a day after it was released to manufacturers (RTM) for their viewing, qualifying and rebadging pleasure.

Released a short while ago by the ever-so-popular warez group known as BetaInsiders were the versions Windows Server 2008 x86 RTM and Windows Server 2008 x64 RTM all in DVD/ISO format – with both English and German editions. The release can be found via the usual sources of BitTorrent, Usenet and scene servers – everywherepeople usually wander for these types of things.

Don’t let the name of the group fool you, it’s the full working NOS as demonstrated below.
alt='windowsserver2008'” banner. We’re not sure what’s heroic about releasing it to the world this way, but it amused us when we called Microsoft for a statement and we were the first to let them know it happened. µ

small note...

... you fail to mention that the release it's useless as it isn't cracked nor does it come with a valid key. all you can do with it is to watch the 60 day timer count down to 0 and ask you to activate. think of it as a "demo" version.

Not so heroic

Or, to put it another way, "Hey guys, there's a pirate version of Windows Server, the pirates are really great, and here's how to get it..."

C'mon now, I'm no more of a fan of MS than anyone at the Inq (Andrew Thomas, put your hand _down_!), but this isn't a good spin.

SP1 at RTM?

According to that screenshot it has Servie Pack 1 installed?

I think thats a Vista machine screenshot and not Server 2008.

It was released on technet on Monday.

Doesn't seem much like a leak.

People with a (fairly cheap) MS Technet subscription have had download access to the 2008 since Monday.

"Leaks"?

If by "leaks" you mean "was released to MSDN and Technet subscribers through Microsoft's download service"...

we can count on our trusted tabloids for dealing with this sort of Vole leakage!

60 days?

Wao the trial has been extended to 60 days, not the usual Windows Trial 30 days. If it does, with normal 3x grace period, intead of 120 days, we get 240 day, or 8 months.

Does it realy-realy RTM?

sp1

Server 2008 comes with SP1 installed.. thats old news. MS figured that then the public wont have to wait for that first SP everyone wants before they install it. Pretty intelligent if you ask MS..

It's the bona fide RTM release!

Yep, it's NOT a fake ... it's the bona fide RTM release, downloaded and installed it myself from da TechNety

The reason it reads as being SP1 on the screen shot is because the code base for Windows Server 2008 "IS" Vista SP1

It will say the exact same thing on all official versions, being knocked out on the 27th
