According to Reuters, the video of Daniela Cicarelli, who is only known outside Brazil for once being engaged to a famous footballer, had circulated widely on the video-sharing site.
Telecos and ISPs blocked YouTube because they were unable to limit blocking to the Cicarelli video. Stars of the video, Cicarelli and Brazilian banker Renato Malzoni won an order for its removal from the site after the Brazilian courts decided that YouTube violated the couple's right to privacy in hosting the video.
Of course the video ended up on loads of other sites worldwide which were not connected to YouTube, thus making any court order fairly useless.
YouTube removed all copies of the Cicarelli video pretty smartish, but users kept putting it back up. In lifting the ban, Sao Paulo state Supreme Court Justice Enio Santarelli Zuliani denied he engaged in censorship, but had concerns about the impact of the ban.
The judge also warned that he could reinstate a YouTube ban in Brazil if the outfit could not explain why it could not block the video alone or have explain why it could not use software to prevent the Cicarelli clip from popping back on the site.
