Tolkien rendered in DX10

Graphzilla on the rampage
Tuesday, 8 January 2008, 12:12

LORD OF THE RINGS Online has officially become the first MMO to support DirectX 10, as its beta graphics patch goes non-beta.

The virtual world features upgraded shader effects for water, more fancy particle effects, better lighting and and few other mini tweaks. Developer Turbine reckon it has optimised the game for GeForce 8 graphics cards. The game is part of Graphzilla's TWIMTBP scheme.

Roy 'The Boy' Taylor said, "Lord of the Rings Online players can enjoy graphics as good as or even better than many FPS games. This is an outstanding achievement." Quite so, Roy.

Those playing the WoW wannabe should find the patch on its way to them right around now. µ

Optimized? Yeah....

As always... Optimized means = about 30 FPS with GeForce 8800 GT/GTS 512. I like it. lol:)

EVE?

What about Eve-Online? It has had DX10 support for at least a month now.

Optimized

Optimized = finely tweaked to maximize the income from your pockets (while giving barely adequate performance), thus OPTIMIZING the (manufacturer's) R.O.I./performance ratio..... :-p

EVE isnt DX10

EvE isnt DX10 its still waiting for the next patch which should enable it, saying that EvE does have very shiny DX9 graphics!

And I have a Q6600 and 8800GT vista x64 and I get playable frame rates (read 40+) in all areas of LOTRO with max settings...

DX10?

LotRO has had DX10 status for about 3 or 4 months now (book 11 I think). It was beta, but while be pretty raw, ran fairly decent. Well as decent as a game can get under Vista w/ DX10 enabled LOL.

Still, I've seen that nividia typically gets better results for their investments than DAMMIT. I mean, really, DAMMIT (well ATI anyway) through how much money at valve and in most cases it was less than 5FPS difference? So much for branding.

Then again, I shouldn't complain, as I hate DAMMIT drivers.

LotRO looks sweet...and EVE not DX10

Ive played both LotRO with the new DX10 patch and looks friggin sweet, and i got a 8800 GTS 640MB and run pretty damn good, you just need to tweak it right :P
About EVE no, its not a DX10 game...yet, the Trinity upgrade is the base for the FUTURE DX10 update, all you need to play EVE right now with all the eye candy on, is a SM3.0 card. Besides you cant enable FSAA and HDR together yet...i hope they fix that soon, unless they already did.
Cheers.

Hellgate: London, INQ forgot it's own

Hellgate London was released in October 2007 and supports DirectX 10 out of the box. It's true MMO nature can be debated since no one has yet died from addiction though ... and you don't HAVE to pay for it to play it. Action scene slide show rendering in Vista optimizes every 10th frame in impressive detail ... if you want to actually PLAY the game you're probably running XP.

EVE?

Eve online has had DX9 graphics engine upgrade in december 07 ... last month. DX10 is some time this year.

I thought EVE was still DX9

The last EVE patch give better DX9 graphics, still not DX10 as far as I know.

Also the DX10 graphics in LOTRO kill performance, need a new graphics card :(

EVE...

Eve-online does not support DX10, in fact the newest patch merely added DX9 graphics.

Re: EVE?

Er... No it hasn't, it had a DX9 overhaul to make use of cards with SM3.

No, no Eve.

If you wanna talk "supporting DX10" you'll have to go back to October's "Book 11" update, which started the BETA support.

Closer reading of the article will reveal that this is the end of BETA.

Still can't make the switch...

I am currently playing LOTRO on an 8800GTX OC with an OC'd Q6600 on WinXP Pro. I just can't see the need for me to upgrade to a terrible OS like Vista for slightly better shadows/water/lighting. So I will stay on XP until there's some kind of "patch" for DX10 on XP. (Hopefully!)

When WoW gets DX10...

... Blizzard would have a real nightmare. People are already addicted that much on a DX-9 game...

Direct X 10

Eve-Online just recently incorporated DX 9.0C, not DX 10 support. But who knows that may be on the way!

LOTR online looks fantastic with the new support and runs beautifully!

Eve is DX9

The new graphics client for EVE is DX9. CCP have stated that their DX10 engine is still coming, but release is unknown.

Incorrect

As written by Edding, incorrect article.

EVE isnt DX10

The Trinity upgrade only brought the engine up to DX9 levels since it only requires SM3.0 which is DX9.

Yes the gfx make it look very sexy, but why CCP cant add AA and AF to Eve i will never know

Eve is not DX10

They have only updated the ship models and textures, moving up to the later DX9 shader tech.

Doesnt look as good as the pre-Trinity demos would have led us to believe but still looks good.

"news"

As the DX10 LOTRO patch went live in 24-Oct-2007, one may say that this is a little bit of "old news".

Calling LOTRO a WOW wannabe is a bit off. Not that Turbine would mind having the number of clients that WoW has, but albeit the similarities, the games have some significant differences.

I have active subs in both, and although WoW has the upper hand is several aspects, one thing I think is clear - Turbine Devs are much more forthcoming and the game has evolved much better than WoW of late has.

ahhh? yeah EVE.

Yes previous comment mentioned EVE Online. Would have to agree there. They were first.

Besides whos still playing LOTRO anyway?

Hellgate...

Hellgate:London has had DX10 support since it came out... It's not the biggest mmorpg, and it has a solo mode, but if Guild Wars is an mmo so it Hellgate.

WoW Wannabe?

I'd hesitate to call it a WoW wannabe. I've played both LotRO and WoW and they're similar in the way MMOs are similar, hardly clones of one another.

Other than that, the graphics look great, and if you're a LotR fan or a Tolkien fan, the way the game stays true to the novels (more so than the movies) is a real treat for those who want to see it.
