Nokia staff to strike this afternoon

Up to 8,500 to Finnish early

NOKIA STAFF in Finland are staging a half-day strike this afternoon in protest at recent layoffs, according to Reuters.

Last week, Nokia said it would cut up to 700 jobs, including about 340 in Finland, as part of a reorganisation.

Of course, Nokia's position is particularly sensitive in its native Finland where it is by far the largest company. The layoffs might also suggest that despite persistent rumours, Nokia is unlikely to pursue an acquisition of Palm. µ

* INQBLOT Wikipedia has some excellent trivia on Nokia, including the fact (possibly) that the special ringtone is Morse code for ‘SMS'. It also reminds us that the company name should be pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, as in “Give us that phone or I'll knock ya block off”. µ
