Hard drive can warn you about tsunamis

Free software warns you to head to the hills

FREE SOFTWARE, which monitors vibrations in the hard disks of computers, can apparently detect the undersea earthquakes that cause tsunamis.

The Tsunami Harddisk Detector takes the measurements used to keep the read-write head of the disk on track and sends it to a peer to peer network.

Core Computers analyze the data, and ignore vibrations generated by a computer being kicked and arrange for the right people to be told about it.

The software can provide warnings because earthquake seismic waves travel at about 5,000 kilometres per hour, while tsunamis move much slower at 500 to 1,000 kilometres per hour. This means your hard drive knows more about a tsunamis than you.

Ironically if it warns you of a tsunamis it will probably be left behind in the mad dash for the hills. More here. µ
