IF YOU WERE wondering what consequence a lack of competition between AMD and Intel might mean for the market itself, you got an answer today.
Chipzilla said today it is to release Core 2 Extreme QX9770 sometime during Q1'08, as an answer to the expected release of Phenom FX processor.
But the firm announced specs of the processor today. It told loyal hacks that it's not sampling the CPU, but it would be lovely if they could do a preview by taking existing QX9750 and overclocking it to 3.2GHz - by changing the multiplier from 9x333 to 8x400. You've read it correctly: the 45nm part will beuse a front-side bus at 400MHz QDR (1.60 GT/s), up from the previous 333MHz QDR (1.33 GT/s).
For the first time in five years, after launching paper dragons and tigers back in the day, Intel is going back to its old ways. While AMD's BenchmarkFest event did not exactly go well with the members of the press, the announcement from Intel is just incredible.
This chip - when it arrives - should further increase Intel's performance lead over Daamit, but with a price of 1000 EUR in all markets (around 1.470 USD), that lead will stay only in the world of performance. There aren't a whole lot of people that are able to afford 1500 USD but then again, not everything is in the price.
Anyhow, here is our own preview of the QX9770:
Owners of QX9750 processor only need to follow these instructions
and they will own a QX9770 CPU
As a paper CPU requires, we created the QX9770 by using a business card, cutting it to fit nicely onto the Socket 775, gently clamped down the lever and this spankin' new CPU was ready to go.
Unlike the real QX9770, you can get this one today, but we do not support RMA. µ
Intel has supported overclocking since they released the 975 BX boards.

You can download the OCing software here: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/software/dcc/download.htm
Did they really quote the price in Euro's because that would be bigger news than having a new extreme edition
You gotta love Intel's EU PRs.
Core 2 Extreme QX9770 ...
8800GT ...

Ahh those EE days of thermal extremes are back.

Screaming fans, obligatory water cooling, mobos that crack from heat with distended bulging capacitors ...

All for what??

Just to pip AMD at the post?

The 3870 and 3850 cards are ice cool at idle and perform well, plus they won't break the bank or require a kilowatt of PSU to run.

Phenom likewise performs well at idle (like the new Intel chips) and is a good performer too.

Once they iron out the microcode and driver issues I'd imagine both will be a quality product at their respective price points.

Sure AMD can't compete at present with NVIDIA or INTEL at the high end, but unless NVIDIA get into the platform market they will see decreasing returns.

Intel's booming market share can't stand a decrease as it will crash (correct) their share price accordingly - likewise for NVIDIA.

As AMD gear up to flood the market with cheap chips the opposition is going into blind panic.

They can't compete with AMD at the bottom end of the market - INTEL is too top heavy, and NVIDIA are fabless.

The war goes on ...

I should be getting paid for this sort of hack dribble Mike ...
the QX9770 was already benchmarked at Anandtech so I guess the processor is real!
This Looks Good On Paper Anyways......
Maybe this paper 9770 will work better in my asus striker extreme since the qx9650 doesn't work at all.
Yo Theo, I think you mean,
"Owners of "QX9650" processor only need to follow these instructions and they will own a QX9770 CPU.

Funny article! Keep this up.
keep up the good work.
